anxiety treatment for teens Anxiety is a familiar feeling that everyone experiences, especially teens and adolescents. Anxiety occurs when we are faced with stressful events, and it serves as a way of motivating and focusing us when operating normally. For example, anxiety from driving in rush hour traffic makes you more vigilant. It could motivate you to change your behavior, such as turning off the radio or ceasing conversations with a passenger. Anxiety is often described as the “fight-or-flight” response, but it is obviously more nuanced.

Unfortunately, many Americans suffer from anxiety disorders–a number of different anxiety-related conditions that depart from the constructive form anxiety should take. Instead, the overwhelming or uncontrollable anxiety becomes disruptive to daily functioning. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “Over 40 million adults in the U.S. (19.1%) have an anxiety disorder. Meanwhile, approximately 7% of children aged 3-17 experience issues with anxiety each year. Most people develop symptoms before age 21.”

At Clear Recovery Center, we offer anxiety treatment for teens at two California locations: Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. If anxiety is causing issues for your teenager at school, home, or work, call 866.522.2084 to learn how we can help.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

All anxiety disorders have certain similarities with respect to symptoms and effects on a teenager’s lifestyle. However, there are many different types of disorders. Some of the most common types include:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Phobias

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

GAD causes constant, exaggerated worrying about everyday life. This worrying can become so all-consuming that it is hard to concentrate or finish daily tasks. A person with GAD may become exhausted from the constant worrying and experience physical symptoms such as nausea or headaches.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder is not shyness or being an introvert. It is an intense fear of social interaction. Most commonly, this fear is driven by irrational worries related to embarrassment or humiliation. For example, those affected with social anxiety disorder may not participate in class discussions or conversations in a group setting because they feel they will say something stupid or awkward, or worse, not know what to say. When a social situation is unavoidable, and especially if it is sudden or forced, panic attacks are a likely outcome.

Panic Disorder

This disorder is characterized by panic attacks and sudden feelings of terror that can occur repeatedly and without warning. Panic attacks are often mistaken for heart attacks. A panic attack is often accompanied by physical symptoms, including chest pain, heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and stomach upset. Many people will take desperate measures to avoid an attack, including social isolation.

Phobias

We all tend to avoid certain things or situations that make us uncomfortable or even fearful. But for someone with a phobia, certain places, events, or objects create powerful reactions of intense, irrational fear. Most people with specific phobias have several things that can trigger those reactions. They will often go to extreme lengths to avoid those triggers. Depending on the type and number of triggers, attempts to control fear can take over a person’s life.

Signs Your Teen Needs Anxiety Disorder Treatment

Naturally, the signs and symptoms of the various anxiety disorders will vary based on the triggers and specific situations. However, several indicators are common to most anxiety disorders. These include:

  • Constantly feeling “on-edge”
  • Excessive restlessness
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Feeling an uncontrollable sense of worry
  • Difficulties sleeping, such as issues staying or falling asleep
  • Increased sense of irritability

You’ll experience some of these symptoms in everyday life. However, if you see these traits in your teen constantly or to an excessive degree, it’s time to get them help so they can live a happier life. Call 866.522.2084 today to start their treatment journey.
